The Exchange attempts to capture of a cross-section of the scholarship within the College of Education giving its faculty, staff, and students a venue in which to share their research and experience not only within the University, but with the broader educational community on the Internet as well.

However, like any publication, attention and care must go on behind the scenes in order to give the articles their best chance of success.  Success, for the purposes of The Exchange can be defined as a rich co-mingling of diverse ideas that adequately demonstrates the depth of ideas and experience within the COE to colleagues, students (potential and current), researchers, and indeed the entire Internet community.

To this end, we have detailed here the fundamental submission process along with some guidelines that will aid us in getting your article off and running as soon as possible.

Rules and Guidelines

  1. Affiliation: Author/Contributor must be affiliated in an intellectual and substantive fashion with the UM Saint Louis’ College of Education
  2. Profile: Author/Contributor must provide a brief bio, title,  photo, department affiliation, valid UMSL email address, and optionally a personal/professional website address and/or a curriculum vitae.  This will default to author’s COE Exchange profile if an alternative  is not provided.
  3. Originality: Article must be primarily original material if to be included on Main and Category pages.
  4. Artwork: Author/Contributor is encouraged to provide artwork for use within the article to help add visual interest for readers.  Artwork must have the appropriate copyrights or be demonstrably within the public domain.1  If no artwork has been provided, author/contributor must work with COE Exchange staff to select artwork within the public domain.2
  5. Editorial Permission: Author/Contributor understand that their article(s) will be formatted in a fashion so as to resemble other offerings through the COE Exchange.  For special consideration on exceptions, author will need to consult with the Exchange Coordinator and Site Administrator.

Workflow

Unfortunately, there is a necessary bureaucracy through which articles all will need to go though in order to be published.  In most cases, this will be relatively trivial requiring 3 to 5 business days to complete.  For clarity, the process is detailed as follows:

  • Submission: Article is submitted to the COE Exchange Coordinator via direct email or through online form.  Coordinator helps make determinations on the ideal time to introduce article for publication.
  • Copy Editing: Article is given to the COE Exchange editorial pool (currently approved members of the TLC floor staff) for basic spell checking, formatting, artwork placement, and in-text linking. Oversight done by Site Coordinator and Site Administrator.
  • Final Draft Approval: Both the Site Coordinator and Administrator agree that article adheres to general COE scholarly topics and publication requirements (detailed above).
  • Moderator Approval: A designated moderator appointed by each subject area (Teaching and Learning, Character Education, Social Justice, etc…) will review each submission to a content area to be certain that it is applicable and appropriate to the category.  Moderator will communicate with author as needed.
  • Publication: Once moderator gives approval the Exchange Coordinator will publish and inform the author of publication.
