Usability Improvements to the Learning Studio Laptops
The laptops in the Learning Studio have recently been updated to allow students and faculty to logon using their SSO IDs, much like they would at any other lab computer. This is achieved by utilizing a new feature in the latest version of Cisco’s VPN (Virtual Private Network) Client, which allows it to start before users logon. With the VPN connected, machines can be joined wirelessly to UMSL’s Active Directory. Joining these laptops to the domain provides better functionality; for instance, users can now access their network drive (SAMBA space) through My Computer, just like they would on any lab machine.
We’ve also purchased secondary batteries, replacing the CD drive. This will roughly double the battery life to about 2-2.5 hours. The rationale is that the CD drives are almost never used, and the current battery life only lasts an hour, so it would be more beneficial to students and teachers to have an extra battery.
